. . . actually his full name was &#8220;Nick Danger, Third Eye.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 When Danger was a puppy, he liked to chew on things, as all puppies do.\u00a0 When my back was turned, he went to work on the rungs of an old oak chair I found at a flea market.\u00a0 He chewed all the way through\u00a0 a side rung and mangled the two turned rungs in front as you can see below.\u00a0 It was that way for 20 years.\u00a0 (Click on any image to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-132\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-004-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"Danger's Chair 004\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With Danger a distant but fond memory, I finally decided it was time to do something about the chair.\u00a0 To begin, I cut the old front rungs off and drilled out the sockets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-133\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-005-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"Danger's Chair 005\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-134\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-006-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Danger's Chair 006\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I pulled some white oak from my stash and went to work on my lathe to turn one new side rung and two new front rungs, modeled as closely as possible after the originals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-136\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-019-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Danger's Chair 019\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, I turned to two tools from the 18th century to prepare the new parts to go in the leg sockets.\u00a0 The first, a spoke pointer mounted on a hand brace at the bottom of the following picture, is used somewhat like a pencil sharpener to trim down the end of the rung so that the second tool, a tenon cutter also mounted on a brace in the middle of the picture, can be used to cut down the end of the rung to fit the leg socket.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-137\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Dangers-Chair-022-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Danger's Chair 022\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The process, as the following sequence shows, is to &#8220;point&#8221;
