{"id":547,"date":"2015-07-16T16:03:32","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T23:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/?p=547"},"modified":"2020-02-08T13:02:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-08T21:02:20","slug":"finished-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/?p=547","title":{"rendered":"Finished!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finished this tall chest in late May.\u00a0 The primary wood is American Black Cherry, about 90% of it from one tree.\u00a0 Cherry plywood was used for drawer bottoms and the back panels, while quarter-sawn white oak was used for the drawer sides and backs.\u00a0 The entire chest, inside and out, has three coats of hand-rubbed Watco Danish Oil (Natural). The solid brass drawer pulls (called &#8220;bridge&#8221; pulls) and knobs for the cabinet doors came from Crown City Hardware in Pasadena, CA. The hand-cast, solid brass hinges are from Horton Brasses in Cromwell, CT.\u00a0 From concept drawings to completion, this took me about 160 hours.\u00a0 (Click on any photo to enlarge.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-548 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-001-762x1024.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-001-762x1024.jpg 762w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-001-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The chest is 72 inches tall, 34 inches wide, and 22 inches front to back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-553 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-008-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-008-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-008-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each panel in the cabinet doors is made up of a book-matched pair of boards which were beveled first on the table saw, and then finished with a hand plane.\u00a0 The door frames are quarter-sawn cherry with the rails tenoned into the stiles.\u00a0 The transition molding and the crown molding were cut on the table saw as coves and then split into the quarter round profile.\u00a0 The outer edge of the crown molding was extended with solid stock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-552 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-006-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-006-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-006-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The drawer fronts are graduated from bottom to top (9.5&#8243;, 9&#8243;, 8.5&#8243;, 7.5&#8243;) and each drawer front is one solid piece of American Black Cherry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-551 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-005-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-005-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-005-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quarter-sawn, Eastern white oak was chosen for its stability in the drawer sides and backs.\u00a0 The half-blind dovetails were all hand cut with a 14 ppi saw and chisel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-0041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-555 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-0041-837x1024.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-0041-837x1024.jpg 837w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-0041-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shelves and center divider are solid cherry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-549 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-003-756x1024.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"474\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-003-756x1024.jpg 756w, https:\/\/maxvollmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cherry-dresser-003-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The upper section of the chest is a separate unit and can be removed for transport.\u00a0 Back panels for the upper and lower sections are 3\/8&#8243;
